US SAILOR Of The Week
Franny Charles

Franny Charles
Franny Charles is sailing through life. Sailing ever since he can remember, he naturally joined the sailing team after he was accepted to Tufts University in Medford, MA. Since then, his main boats of choice have been 110s, 210s and Stars. Seventeen years ago, he found the perfect vessel to share his passion for sailing as Sailing Master of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Nautical Association (MITNA). His favorite part of the job is “working with very smart people who never stop asking questions. Students always want to learn more.” His passion is clearly contagious, as he has watched the MITNA develop into a fleet of 85 boats, 40 sailing team members and 2,000 recreational members; a growth of 60% since he started. He has big plans to also make it the best in the country. In the next three years, his goal is to renew all of the sailing fleets and rededicate them on a new floating dock system. “It’s an interesting challenge,” he says of the multi-billion dollar project. Despite this huge undertaking, he still has time to serve as Chief Umpire at US SAILING events. His next gig will be in August in Erie, PA, at the U.S. Team Racing Championship where he has arranged for 21 umpires to volunteer. For him, umpiring is a natural fit, as his collegiate coaching experience has trained him to anticipate a sailor’s moves before they happen and to position himself accordingly. No doubt Franny is in a great position to keep our sport going strong.

No stranger to 210 ownership Rich was highlighted in a July 1966

Boston Traveler news article. It is reprinted below:

Rich and his sister Barbara had purchased 210 # 321 in 1965 when Barbara was 20 and Rich was only 14. Rich has been racing with Greg Sullivan for many years but in 2008 will be campaigning 210 # 421, Raven.

2007 News

The Annual Meeting of the members of the International 210 Association was held on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2007 at 4:00 p.m., at the OCEAN CLUB, Hull, Massachusetts

The executive officers elected for 2008 are:

President - Mark DeShong, Boston Bay

Vice President East - Kevin Riley, Hingham

Vice President West - Dave Johnson, Sr., Gull Lake

Treasurer - Sean Sweeney, Cohasset

Secretary - James Sullivan, Hingham

Rules Committee Chair - James Robinson

Publicity Co-Chairs - Gregory V. Sullivan and Robert Gibbs

Immediate Past President - Gregory V. Sullivan

Robust discussion was held regarding the future development of the class and the pros and cons of the changes proposed by some of the membership.

Dan Keefe, of the Boston Bay Fleet, was the 2007 recipient of the Vice President's Trophy for long term service and dedication to the class and to his local fleet.  This recognition was long overdue!

Ken Cook, of Cohasset, was the 2007 recipient of the Ralph Warren Sullivan Trophy, given for long term Corinthian spirit and sportsmanship.

ATTENTION 210 SAILORS:  Our boat roster needs updating. Please check it out on this site and then email any changes to g.sullivan@att.net. Please email any photos or other materials that you would like to see on this site. Thank you and Happy Holidays to all!

In the Wallace Trophy he was second to Tom Vandermolen who captured the gun in races one and three while finishing second in the second race.

Babel dominated in the Mid-West Championship with four firsts out of six races, although Tom Vandermolen never let up the pressure with two firsts and three seconds.

Congratulations to both Jim and Tom!!!

The Graves Plaque was swept by the team of John Matthews and Kevin Riley. It was held in conjunction with Quincy Bay Race Week and so the "Mania" team also captured the Francis Charles Trophy. Greg Sullivan was second and Jim Sullivan third.

7/31/07 - Good Morning, Greg and to Everyone Else-

A note on sail measurement: I am sure that most are familiar with this change, but sails that have previously measured in do not need to be remeasured. This was a fact that had escaped my attention until two years ago.

Dennis Williams, former owner of the 210 "Snake" which he sailed in Marblehead back in the '70s, has purchased Jim Gretzky's "Topat" 452! This past weekend in the FYC's annual Mid-Summer Regatta, Dennis made his debut with 452, and he did it in grand style with finishes of 2-1-1 to win the regatta_ unfortunately Sunday's racing was forced to be abandoned due to lack of wind. 452's sister boat 453, Bill Yetman's "Zephyr" finished a close second with finishes of 1-2-2. The margins of victory in boat lengths for the three races were 5-2-1/2. Very, very tight. Great racing. Yetman, Schulz and Summers sailed 453 with fresh Doyle sails. Williams, Gretzky and a special friend sailed 452. Their mystery guest was former America's Cup sailor, sailmaker (now Quantum), and one-design great Bill Shore. They sailed with new Quantum sails. Due to multiple scheduling conflicts, it is at this point unclear as to whether 452 will be able to sail in the Nationals. The team is working on various creative options to try to make it happen.

Speaking of mystery guests, the wild-card crew who is reported to sail with Gordo Baird in the upcoming Nationals is the renowned Mark Lindsay.

Other teams that are reported to be coming to the Nationals  are National Champs Charlie Henry and the Stazko-Putney combo.

This year's racing will be intense.

A note about the Falmouth Yacht Club: Notwithstanding this Sunday's light air, all previous FYC racing this summer has been in fabulous winds in the 12-16 range. The line is a quick sail from the harbor. The FYC restaurant_ indeed the whole FYC physical plant_ was completely upgraded two years ago, and it is fantastic. The bar has one of the finest views on the East Coast. From the elevation of the second floor you overlook Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds. It is gift to yourself to relax with friends on the upper deck in the late afternoon sunlight and sea breezes and to be refreshed and renewed. Evenings on the upper deck are arguably even better.

You will enjoy all aspects of this regatta. Treat yourself right. Register now.

Best regards to all,

Jim Summers

JIM GRETZKY responds:

Hi to all,

Dennis has purchased TOPAT from me this summer.  She is number 454.

Dennis also owns 210-421 which is for sale.  Now called RAVEN, most will remember her as the original SCREAMING TUNA when owned by the Putney Brothers.  She has had a very successful racing career including numerous top two finishes at the Nationals as well as many regatta wins in the Midwest, Graves, Wallace and Wells.  She has received extensive upgrades over the past year including a new structural grid assembly, keel bolts and lifting plates, mast collar, chainplates and a winchless system.  As part of the grid installation, the core was removed in way of the keel and she has had the interior gelcoated like the new boats.  This work was performed at Shaw Yachts, builders of the new 210’s.  She has been fitted with a set of the new fiberglass seats developed by Bernie Shaw.

She is available in race ready condition with a new North main and genoa that have 6 races on them.  The price is $14,000 as detailed above and includes the trailer.  Please contact me for further information or to purchase this fine boat.

Good luck to all competitors at the Nationals.  Falmouth is a great place to sail as well as to bring the rest of the family.  The Club has its own beach and the races can be seen from shore!

Please note, we have inventory on 210 masts, booms, steps and many other parts.  We also have halyards and sheets in stock.

 Jim

"The Quincy Yacht Club Challenge Cup has for several seasons past played an important part in the small-boat racing in Massachusetts waters, and this season the races for it have attracted more attention and interest among yachtsmen than ever before, owing to the extreme and and abnormal proportions of the racing machines which were built to sail for the cup"  The Rudder ~ 1902

In 1898 the Quincy Yacht Club offered a perpetual challenge to race for a solid silver trophy of artistic design and elaborate workmanship, valued then at $500.00. It has been raced for in International 210s since 1962.

Sarah Leggat and Dan Evans captured the 2007 QUINCY YACHT CLUB CHALLENGE CUP with finishes of first, fourth and second (7 points) in the three race series held in Hingham on September 22nd and 23rd.  Jack Driscoll and Bob Reis both had 9 points, with Driscoll taking second using a tie breaker. The home town team of Bill Yetman co-skippering with Jim Summers, and veteran 210er Rick Schulz serving as crew, won the National Championship C. Raymond Hunt Trophy in Falmouth last week.

Cohasset's Wiley Wakeman finished second, less than a half of a point, (16.6 to 17), behind Yetman's #453, Zephyr. Dennis Williams, skippering his newly acquired Topat3, was third.

A special "Thanks" to all the volunteers who planned, worked, and gave of their time to make the series in Falmouth so great!!!

P Memorial Weekend P South Boston 2007

This is the official start to the summer sailing season at the South Boston Yacht Club. The weather was great with clear skies, good wind and warm temperatures. This regatta was sailed by four boats from the S.B.Y.C. and this year Greg Sullivan in boat #431 from the Hingham Yacht Club was here again. Sunday the wind was from the ENE and blowing around 8-12 mph. with an out going tide. There were two races sailed. The first race the course was “6-X-6”. This race had to be postponed for a short while due to the arrival of a cruse ship. The second race started with a long up wind leg to mark #3 that is off the shore of Deer Island, then a long run back under spinnaker to the finish. Monday there was one race sailed in the afternoon after the Memorial Services at the club. This day the wind was from the West. The course was “2-J-4”. This course is up wind to a drop mark #2 off of “O” street then down wind to #J off the Long Island shore, to a reach behind Spectacle Island to #4 then up wind to the finish. Everyone seemed to have a good time and the finishes seem to be getting closer

C To all who were out there!
